I think the main reason is the popularity through media. Media is largely encouraging cricket.

Cricket is a game introduced by the English or, it is a native game of England. And since we have to our history, the rule of Britain for more that 150 to 200 years, cricket is considered to have originated then and Indians have caught on to the tradition.
